message from executive director, jerry w. brown
For more than twenty years, I have had the honor of serving as Executive Director of Bethany Center. During my tenure, changes both subtle and radical have transformed the Bethany Center community. As residents have become increasingly multilingual and multicultural my staff and I have learned to say “hello” and “thank you” in a number of languages—Mandarin, Russian, Spanish and more. But that is only the beginning.
quality of life
Through Bethany Center’s evolution, our core mission is constant: meeting
the resident’s needs. In addition to providing affordable and service-supported
housing, Bethany Center offers essential wellness programs that strengthen
creativity, health, productivity and independence--activities that greatly
enhance quality of life. In many cases, these activities challenge participants,
encouraging them to test their assumptions and engage in new ways with
themselves and the world around them.
Through our ongoing relationships with experts, speakers and instructors, residents are consistently exposed to fresh perspectives: a rabbi delivering a hopeful, yet atypical Chanukah message; the dance instructor telling participants they can lift their arms a little bit higher; the district supervisor who inspires the audience with his personal story of immigration, academic perseverance and hard work; and the nurse who motivates residents to make healthier lifestyle choices.
stewardship
Bethany Center is highly committed to being a good steward of the government
funds entrusted to us. Whether indirect, in the form of taxi scrip that
allows a disabled resident to get to physical therapy or direct Section
8 vouchers to supplement the cost of housing an individual displaced by
Hurricane Katrina, we are extremely grateful for the support this funding
stream provides.
staff
I appreciate the competence of our entire staff that makes it possible to
operate a supportive housing program that exceeds the standards, regulations
and audits required of Bethany Center. Through our successful administrative
practices and accurate record keeping, we remain accountable to our government,
our peers, our residents, our donors and ourselves.
expansion
With our commitment to growth, evolution and improvement, Bethany Center
will soon serve even more individuals. We are expanding our innovative
programming to engage individuals living just beyond our walls, in the
Mission neighborhood. This expansion will bring not only new people and
fresh activities, but also new possibilities.
passion
A few years ago, I witnessed the sudden magic that came with unveiling an
artistic landmark--San Francisco’s tallest mural--emblazoned on the side
of our building. This is just one example of the great feats that are possible
with the right combination of creativity, community partnership, and commitment
to our residents. It is this very passion for excellence that has transformed
Bethany Center into a modern, robust and wonderful place--both to live
and to work.

Thank you for your support and interest in Bethany Center Senior Housing.
